DOCTORAL DEFENCE
Jere Remes, FM will defend the PhD thesis, entitled “Probing the QCD Phase Diagram via Holographic Models”, on Monday 14th December at 14 o’clock.
The opponent is Associate Professor Umut Gürsoy from Utrecht University, and the custos is Associate Professor Aleksi Vuorinen from the University of Helsinki.

The event begins with a focus on the importance of scientific literacy in our society. We will listen to the entertaining and informative talks of Professor Kari Enqvist and Professor Esko Valtaoja, scientists and science communicators par excellence.
We will then introduce the beauty of Quantum Science and Technologies to anyone, regardless of age, background and education. QPlayLearn is completely free for everyone to use!
We will show videos from world-leading quantum scientists and from game developers from all over the globe. Finally, we will conclude with a live panel discussion involving national and international experts on Quantum Science and Technology, quantum computing companies like IBM, representatives of the game industry, and educators.

Kumpula Physics Colloquium online, Friday 18.12.2020
The next Kumpula Physics Colloquium of the Autumn series will take place on Friday 18.12.2020 at 14:15 on the University Zoom meeting.
Our speaker is Sabrina Maniscalco, who is the new Professor in Quantum Information and Logic in the Department of Physics. She is also the Vice Director of the Finnish Centre of Excellence for Quantum Technologies. Her research interests include open quantum systems, quantum Brownian motion, as well as cold atoms and quantum tomography. Sabrina will talk about how combining quantum research with other fields of science could help tackle global challenges. The title of her talk is “The Promise of Quantum“. The talk will last about 30 minutes, after which there will be time for questions.

Post doc scholarships
Persons who recently have obtained their PhD may apply for a postdoctoral scholarship. The purpose of a postdoctoral scholarship is to enable the grantee to further develop as a researcher. Applicants for a postdoctoral scholarship may also apply for support for research related costs and travel. A separate application for these purposes must be made.
Graduate student scholarships
The graduate student stipend can be awarded for a period of one year or a half year, preferably for the period 1.7. – 31.12. to a student who has been accepted by the university as a doctoral student. The stipend can be awarded conditionally to a student about to graduate.
