“Planar algebra structure of Khovanov homology”
Abstract: The powerful knot invariant Jones polynomial is defined by local skein relations and normalisation. On the other hand, the original categorification of the Jones polynomial was defined on a global scale – Khovanov homology takes whole knots and links as an input. It was later realized, by Bar-Natan, that Khovanov’s construction can be defined locally and that these local pieces can be composed by a planar algebra structure. We take a look at Bar-Natan’s framework and how it can be used to obtain new results about the original Khovanov homology.

DOCTORAL DEFENCE
Laura Martikainen, FM will defend the doctoral dissertation entitled “Measurement of the inclusive jet cross section at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV with the CMS experiment” in the Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, on 23 October 2023 at 13:00. The public examination will take place at the following address: Porthania, Suomen Laki -sali, Yliopistonkatu 3.
Professor Assistant Steven Schramm, University of Geneva, will serve as the opponent, and Mikko Voutilainen as the custos.
The dissertation will be published in the series Internal report (Helsinki Institute of Physics).
