DOCTORAL DEFENCE
Joonas Hirvonen, FM will defend the doctoral dissertation entitled “Phase Transitions in Elementary-Particle Matter” in the Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, on 8 August 2024 at 12:00. The public examination will take place at the following address: Exactum, auditorio CK112, Pietari Kalmin katu 5.
Professor Anders Tranberg, University of Stavanger, will serve as the opponent, and Aleksi Vuorinen as the custos.
The dissertation will be published in the series HIP-Internal Report Series.

The Cooperation in research, innovation and higher education: Maupertuis programme

The French Institute in Helsinki, the French Embassy to Finland and the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in partnership with the Finnish Society for Science and Letters and the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters open a call for projects, under the seed funding programme, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of science, innovation and higher education in areas of interest to both countries.

EDUFI Fellowship
The EDUFI Fellowship is intended, particularly, for providing initial funding to carry out research for a doctoral thesis in Finland.
Applicant: a Finnish university department
Who: a doctoral student or a young researcher from outside Finland
Purpose: initial funding for completing a doctoral research project in Finland, completion of a double degree or a study visit on exceptionally compelling reasons

Fulbright-Technology Industries of Finland Grants (Postdoc)
The Fulbright–Technology Industries of Finland Grant Program awards grants to postdoctoral researchers in the field of technology to carry out a research project in the U.S. The grant can be awarded for a postdoctoral research visit in a U.S. university or research center, lasting between 8 and 12 months.

Seeking Solutions for Global Challenges Award
This award is designed to enable Finnish professionals and postdoctoral researchers to conduct research or professional projects in any discipline on topics of current and global importance at any appropriate U.S. institution or organization. The application schedule for Instrumentarium Science Foundation’s grants was updated last year, moving the start from June to August.

Orion Research Foundation grants for 2025
Grants are designated to support academic research for Finnish medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and natural sciences related to those, such as chemistry and physics according to Orion Research Foundation’s rules.
The grant application period is between 1 August and 10 September 2024.
Alfred Kordelin Foundation
The Foundation awards grants for finalizing Ph.D. theses, and for research visits related to Ph.D. thesis work in various fields of science. A grant awarded for finalizing a Ph.D. thesis should lead to the thesis being submitted for pre-examination by the end of the grant period. Science grants are only awarded to private individuals.
Application period: 1.–15. August 2024.

Nessling Foundation’s general call
In the general grant call, we are looking for innovative projects and active researchers and actors that enable or support sustainability transformation that protects natural systems.
You can apply for in the general grant call for three purposes:
- personal grants for doctoral thesis researchers (for a maximum of 4 years)
- personal grants for postdoc researchers (for a maximum of 2 years)
- project funding for science-based action projects (for one year).
Nessling Foundation’s general call is open from 12.–30. August 2024. We will award a total of 2.3 million euros in grants.
