Jakub Vošmera (ETH)

“D-branes in AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 at k = 1 and their holographic duals”

Abstract: Following the recent work of Eberhardt, Gaberdiel and Gopakumar, exact comparison between various quantities living on the two sides of the AdS/CFT duality has become a possibility. The goal of this talk will be to extend the existing holographic dictionary to include some non-perturbative vacua on both sides. I will start by reviewing the original, purely closed-string setup, giving arguments that string theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with minimal k=1 NS-NS flux is exactly dual to the symmetric-product orbifold CFT with the T^4 as the seed. I will then construct various D-branes of this string theory and calculate their associated cylinder amplitudes. We will observe that these amplitudes match with the cylinder correlators of certain boundary states of the dual CFT, thus suggesting a direct correspondence between these boundary conditions. I will also show that the disk amplitudes of these D-branes localise to those points in the worldsheet moduli space where the worldsheet disk holomorphically covers the spacetime disk. This talk is based on https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.05509.

Feliks Kivela

“Probing specific crystal lattice sites with X-ray standing waves ”

Abstract:  The crystal structure of magnetite (Fe3O4) involves Fe2+ ions in sites with octahedral (Oh) symmetry and Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions in sites with tetrahedral (Td) symmetry. Magnetite exhibits several interesting physical phenomena that are not yet fully understood, such as the Verwey transition, in which the roles of the different Fe sites are an active subject of research. The X-ray standing wave (XSW) technique uses the combination of an incoming and a Bragg reflected X-ray beam to create a standing X-ray wave inside the crystal. The nodes and antinodes of the radiation field can be tuned to different crystallographic planes. In the dipole approximation, the absorption cross section is proportional to the intensity of the X-ray field, while for quadrupolar terms, it’s proportional to the field’s gradient. Changing the phase of the radiation field thus allows us to selectively vary the contributions of different atoms and absorption types (dipolar vs quadrupolar) to the total absorption spectrum. This will aid in studying the elusive physical properties of magnetite in a site-selective manner.

Abstract:  Neutron radiation from the nuclear reactor core causes the embrittlement of the reactor pressure vessel steel alloys. Traditionally, reactor pressure vessel steel alloy embrittlement is monitored using destructive techniques. This can lead to problems in the long-term operation of the power plant. The use of supervised machine learning algorithms has been studied in predicting the embrittlement based on nondestructive measurements.

ALICE is ”FIT” for LHC Run 3

The new Fast Interaction Trigger (FIT) completed the installation of new subdetectors in ALICE LS2 activities. The main contribution of HIP scientists to the ALICE upgrade is focused on FIT. The FIT project was initiated and is led by Wladyslaw Trzaska from Jyväskylä University with other researchers from HIP and Jyväskylä playing critical roles in the operation, performance simulations, and data analysis.

“ Hydrodynamics, “parity” anomaly and deconfined critical point”

Abstract: The evolution of a heavy ion collision passes close to the O(4) critical point of QCD, where fluctuations of the order parameter are expected to be enhanced. Using the appropriate stochastic hydrodynamic equations in mean field near the the pseudo-critical point, we compute how these enhanced fluctuations modify the transport coefficients of QCD. Finally, we estimate the expected critical enhancement of soft pion yields, which provides a plausible explanation for the excess seen in experiment relative to ordinary hydrodynamic computations.
