Mathematical-Physics seminar

Tuesday 17 October 2023, 10:15, M3 (M234, Otakaari 1)

Xavier Poncini (Aalto University)

“Planar-algebraic models: statistical mechanics and knot theory”

Abstract: V.F.R. Jones initially introduced planar algebras to describe the standard invariant of a subfactor. Since then, planar algebras have found many applications in mathematics and physics. Informally, a planar algebra describes the interaction of elements of a graded vector space in the plane. The ‘two-dimensional’ structure of planar algebras makes them natural objects to describe planar statistical-mechanical models. In this talk, I will focus on the role played by planar algebras in relating statistical mechanics and knot theory. In particular, I will introduce a notion of Yang—Baxter integrability and show that statistical-mechanical models with this property give rise to polynomial link invariants. If time permits, I will report on recent results (joint with J. Rasmussen) classifying all singly generated planar algebras admitting a Yang—Baxter integrable model.

“Nonadiabatic lattice dynamics in metals and magnets”

Abstract: In electronic structure theory, lattice vibrations are usually treated under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, where electronic degrees of freedom are assumed to be fast compared to nuclear dynamics. However, going beyond this adiabatic approximation is necessary in many situations for an accurate description of phonons, and their effects on materials properties. I will discuss two such cases. The first case involves Born effective charges, which are crucial to understanding, e.g., ferroelectric polarization, phonon dispersions in ionic insulators, electron-phonon scattering, dielectric screening, electromechanical coupling, and optical spectra in the IR/THz regime. Via density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT) calculations, I will show that going beyond the adiabatic approximation extends the definition of Born effective charges from insulators to conducting systems and relates them to a seemingly unrelated fundamental property of metals: the Drude weight. The second case I will discuss is the coupling of magnetism and phonons in materials. Specifically, I will demonstrate a DFT-based methodology for including the velocity-dependence of interatomic forces, which explicitly accounts for time-reversal symmetry breaking in the nuclear equations of motion. I will show that in some magnetic materials, such as CrI3, the assumption of adiabatic separation between electron and nuclear dynamics breaks down completely due to the role of (slow) spin dynamics in the coupling between phonons and the magnetic order.

Alexander Mühleip (the University of Glasgow)

“Uncovering molecular mechanisms of cristae formation”

Our next Mat/Bio Physics seminar by Dr. Alexander Mühleip. Dr. Mühleip is currently a research fellow at the University of Glasgow and has done seminal work in structural biology of bioenergetic proteins (see one his latest works – https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05817-y). He will introduce us to the fascinating world of mitochondrial energy generation.

Abstract: Cristae are the reaction chambers of the mitochondrion in which oxidative phosphorylation complexes generate and harvest the membrane potential. Different phyla display distinct membrane morphologies and lineage-specific subunit compositions of OXPHOS complexes, however their structure and function have remained poorly understood. By combining structural and functional analysis, our recent work has contributed to understanding how OXPHOS complexes from different organisms form highly divergent higher-order assemblies to induce membrane curvature and generate micro-compartments that allow mitochondrial energy conversion to occur.

Materials/Bio Physics seminar

Thursday 31 August 2023 at 13.15, Physicum D112

We will have our next seminar by Eryang Lu, who has recently been selected as Academy of Finland’s research fellow. He will introduce us to his exciting upcoming project and some new interesting results.

Title: “Defect engineering in multi-principal element random alloys”

Abstract: Multi-principal-element random alloys (MPEAs), or high entropy alloys (HEAs), are drawing strong research interest in recent two decades. Many developed HEAs have shown outstanding physical and mechanical properties under various extreme conditions. The fundamental aspects of defect features and atomic motion mechanisms that govern the “unusual” properties in MPEAs are still not clear. In this project, we will focus on defect processing with various ion beam implantations, microstructural characterization with comprehensive experimental methods, and atomistic simulations on the selected models. The ultimate goal of the proposed project is to develop a detailed description and analysis of defects and elementary diffusion properties in MPEAs. We hope the scientific observations will fill the knowledge gap in bringing the MPEAs concept closer to industrial implementations, and even come up with new theories for further development of innovative high performance metallic materials.
