Antti Rantala (MPA Garching)

“Hierarchical star cluster assembly boosts massive black hole seed formation”

Abstract: Observations and high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations indicate that massive star clusters assemble hierarchically from sub-clusters with a universal power-law cluster mass function. We study the consequences of such an assembly for the formation of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) at low metallicities with our updated N-body code BIFROST based on the hierarchical fourth-order forward integrator. BIFROST integrates few-body systems using secular and regularized techniques including post-Newtonian equations of motion up to order PN3.5 and gravitational-wave recoil kicks for merging BHs. Single stellar evolution is treated using the fast population synthesis code SEVN. We evolve three cluster assembly regions with up to 2.4 million stars following a realistic IMF in ~1000 sub-clusters for 50 Myr. IMBHs with masses up to Mbh ~ 2200 Msun form rapidly mainly via the collapse of very massive stars assembled through repeated collisions of massive stars followed by growth through tidal disruption events and BH mergers. No IMBHs originate from the stars in the initially most massive clusters due to suppression of hard massive star binary formation at high velocity dispersions and the competition between core collapse and massive star life-times. Later the IMBHs form subsystems resulting in gravitational-wave mergers with a 1000 Msun gravitational-wave detection being the observable prediction.”

Kumpula colloquium on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 14:15 in Physicum E204 is a special occasion as we honor the legacy of the late Professor Peter Higgs, Nobel laureate and visionary in particle physics, crucial to theorizing the existence of a key particle that later completed the Standard Model. Professor Kimmo Tuominen of the University of Helsinki will highlight Higgs’ theoretical contributions, followed by Professor Mikko Voutilainen who will discuss the experimental discovery of the Higgs boson. The session will last approximately 45 minutes after of which there is a cocktail reception. The presentations are also available via Zoom.

Materials/Bio Physics seminar

Thursday 16 May 2024 at 14.15, Exactum (C124)

Eetu Makkonen

“Machine-learning molecular dynamics simulations of the effect of beryllium on plastic deformations in copper”

Abstract: Vacuum breakdown (BD) is a significant failure mode in radio-frequency accelerator structures. The breakdown rate (BDR) of different electrode materials is actively studied at CERN in a direct current experimental setup. The copper beryllium alloy has recently shown promise in these studies, allowing significantly higher electric fields in comparison to other Cu alloys. Modern models suggest that dislocation activity in the electrode drives the initial steps leading to BD events. To study this, a tabulated Gaussian approximation potential (tabGAP) for the dilute Cu-Be alloy was developed using an atomic structure dataset computed with density functional theory. With this tabGAP, the effect of interstitial Be atoms on plastic deformations in Cu was explored via the generalized stacking fault energy and measuring dislocation velocity under shear stress. It was found that Be binds to a partial dislocation, decreasing dislocation mobility.

“Production of 52Mn with IBA Cyclone 10/5 cyclotron for early PET studies.”

Abstract: Positron emission tomography (PET) is a tomographic imaging technique based on the administration of a positron-emitting radionuclide attached to a targeting molecule to monitor diverse biochemical and cellular processes in living subjects by obtaining three-dimensional images of the spatial distribution and concentration of the radionuclide activity. 52Mn is a very promising tool for PET imaging, with favorable physical characteristics (half-life of ~6 days) that allow to study long physiological processes and broaden the possibilities for radiolabeling. 52Mn was produced via the reaction natCr(p,n)52gMn and was extracted by solid-phase ion exchange chromatography in sufficient quantity to be able to perform a radiolabeling test of CDTA complex, which was evaluated with radiolabel stability assays in rat serum and cerebrospinal fluid, showing stability for >2 days.

Seminar talk by Jakub Kubečka on 22 April at 15.15 in Chemicum A127

Monday 22.4. at 15.15, Chemicum A127.

Jakub Kubečka from Aarhus University: “Towards Free Energy Calculations from Ab Initio Molecular-Cluster Dynamics Simulations Boosted by Neural Network”.

Jakub is an expert in combining quantum chemistry and machine learning methods in atmospheric clustering studies.

Abstract: Reaction kinetics and thermodynamics of molecular systems are hot topics not only in the atmospheric sciences. In our work, we seek a method to accurately predict the thermodynamic stabilities of atmospheric molecular clusters, which play a crucial role in new particle formation and, due to their abundance, serve as platforms for surface reactions. While quantum chemistry methods can provide accurate thermodynamic properties for small molecular systems, for large systems, current approximations fail to correctly account for molecular/cluster flexibility, dynamics, and vibrational anharmonicity. Here we employ umbrella sampling as a molecular dynamics technique to calculate the free energy profile along a reaction coordinate. Such simulations could be applied to obtain accurate cluster evaporation rates. Additionally, since ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations would require tremendous time, we boost these simulations with a trained neural network potential. In this presentation, we explore the feasibility of employing neural networks to learn complex energy landscapes and demonstrate the application of the neural network for energy/forces modeling and applicability for molecular dynamics simulations. This work represents a step towards advancing computational chemistry methodologies, offering insights into the potential of machine learning for chemistry and molecular dynamics simulations for thermodynamic studies.
