WP 1 Design

Description

The objective of WP1 is to exchange knowledge and provide key information relating CLIC RF structure and two-beam module design work between CLIC and an outside design office, Lewel Group. The information exchange will benefit both parties involved in the exchange by increasing understanding of the requirements and possibilities of the CLIC related 3D-design work.

A Researcher from Lewel Group was integrated in CERN’s RF structure production team in charge of manufacturing the X-band RF structures for the CLIC study. The researcher took part in the actual development and design work being done for the CLIC RF structure development and two beam module. The work consisted of 3D-design work in cooperation with other researchers and designers working on the CLIC project. The actual design concentrates on the modelling of high accuracy RF components, supporting components and components of technical systems necessary for a proper functionality of the CLIC module.

A Researcher, who takes part in secondment from CERN to Lewel Group, will work during his/her stay on exchanging knowledge regarding CLIC requirement in precision assembly, RF applications and vacuum technologies.

The post-doc researcher integrated in CERN’s RF structure production team is in charge of manufacturing the X-band RF structures for the CLIC study. The RF structures are high-precision machining components. Several manufacturing steps and quality controls are required to fulfil the tight technical requirements. The structures are constituted of several parts, for which the machining error shall be of the order of few micrometers only. The post-doc researcher is in charge of studying and proposing the engineering design and machining technology of these precision parts compatible with the associated bonding and/or brazing techniques. The technical systems, such as cooling and vacuum shall also be integrated in the overall design. In the coming years the production of the accelerating structures will have to increase from 12-15 accelerating structures per year up to 100 per year. The post-doc researcher shall study the industrialization of the overall fabrication process. Therefore, the machining process shall be carefully studied and mass production strategy, including cost estimate, prepared for the procurement of the 200000 structures for the CLIC collider.

In the coming years, a larger number of prototype RF structures are planned to be manufactured and tested. The postdoc researcher will also be involved in their engineering design and machining, and propose technical solutions and dedicated test programs for the future series production.

 

Realisation

Designer from Lewel Group Oy (FI) joined the CERN CLIC RF structure prduction team for 12 months in 2010-2011.

Researcher from CERN/HIP takes part in secondment to Lewel Grop Oy (FI) for 2 months in 2013/2014.

Post-doc researcher recruited to CERN RF structure production team for 24 months in 2011-2013.
