CLICMeChanICs

Marie Curie Linking Industry to CERN

WP 3 Machining

Description

The objective of this work package was to exchange knowledge and provide key information relating CLIC component manufacturing and design between CLIC and precision manufacturing company Mectalent Oy. The information exchange benefitted both parties involved in the exchange by increasing the understanding of CLIC requirements on one hand, and the possibilities of manufacturing CLIC components with high accuracy on the other hand.

Manufacturing specialist from Mectalent Oy was integrated to CERN's RF structure production team in charge of manufacturing the X-band RF structures for CLIC study. The exchange of knowledge concentrated in the area of high-accuracy RF component manufacture and design, ultra high vacuum  (UHV) components and materials. The work consisted of research on the influence of the annealing cycle on the fabrication tolerances and study of the fabrication process and the industrialisation of the component fabrication as well as the corresponding mass production.

Realisation

A designer from Mectalent Oy (FI) worked at CERN for 18 months in 2013-2014. He was involved in WP's 3 and 5.
